http://bible.com/111/luk.22.31-32.niv “Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to sift all of you as wheat. But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.”
As one reads the Bible they find figures in it that are very relatable. I am no different. One that I find a strong relation to is Simon also known as Peter. Peter was a man of great courage, doubt, strength, and weakness.
In this passage, Jesus is speaking directly to Peter. He was telling Simon Peter of the request Satan. Yet in the same breath, Jesus spoke victory to and over Peter. See, Jesus knew that Simon would stumble. Jesus knew the affects that it would have on Peter.
Simon was sincerely preparing to follow Jesus to the death. But at this time, he was not quite ready. Peter in his courage, cut off a soldier’s ear in their attempt to capture Jesus. Though, Jesus restored the ear off the soldier. However, Peter in his weakness denied Christ three times just as Jesus predicted.
I can only imagine what that did to Peter. What affects did it have on his doubts and strength? Can you hear his heart cry? In my mind, I can hear Peter saying to himself, “I say that I’m ready to follow Jesus to the death, but I can’t even admit that I know Him.”
Still, that’s not the end of the story. In verse 32 Jesus says, “But I have prayed for you, Simon, that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned back, strengthen your brothers.” The denial of Jesus was not the end for Peter. No, instead it was just the beginning.
In John 21, after Jesus was resurrected, he had a powerful exchange with Peter. In this exchange Peter was restored and renewed. He then walked in the destiny that given for him.
What does that have to do with me or you? We all have a destiny and purpose. A or several moments of weakness does not prohibit that destiny, it catapults us into it.
Jesus said, “…but I have prayed for you, (your name here), that your faith may not fail.”
Have the strength and courage to accept His forgiveness and restoration. Walk in your destiny as you strengthen others along the way.
Love you, be blessed
